Before & After: A NE Portland Backyard Built for Gathering
This backyard landscape design project shows how a thoughtful plan can turn an underused yard into a functional, beautiful, and environmentally responsible outdoor living space.
Before: An Underutilized Backyard with Drainage Issues
The yard had room to breathe. Without a defined gathering space, a place to soak, or any layered planting to create visual depth, the landscape felt unfinished. Downspouts discharged without direction. The back of the lot, while spacious, had no real reason to draw you out. Without clear zones or flow, the space felt disconnected and underused.
After: Custom Landscape Design with Structure and Function
Our approach focused on creating a functional outdoor living space that integrates hardscape, native planting design, and stormwater management.
Custom Cedar Arbor and Paver Patio
The 8' x 12' cedar arbor became the heart of the backyard. Set over an irregular paver pattern, this pavilion-style structure creates a defined outdoor living space with a natural sense of arrival. A radial bench curves alongside it, designed for lingering.
Key benefits:
Creates shade and comfort for outdoor seating
Adds architectural interest to the landscape
Establishes a focal point for backyard design
Cedar Hot Tub With Privacy Screening
The 6' cedar hot tub sits at the far corner of the yard, tucked into privacy evergreens and surrounded by soft layered plantings. Secluded without being isolated, exactly where a hot tub should be.
Why a cedar hot tub works so well:
Naturally durable and weather-resistant material
Blends seamlessly with wood structures and natural landscapes
Creates a destination feature for relaxation and wellness
Works in all seasons, especially in cooler climates
Positioned within the overall layout, the hot tub feels integrated rather than added on, with nearby seating and pathways that make access easy and inviting.
A Curved Cedar Boardwalk That Makes the Journey Part of the Experience
One of the most striking elements of this design is the custom curved cedar boardwalk that winds through the plantings and leads directly to the hot tub. Rather than a straight utilitarian path, this sweeping walkway moves through layers of ornamental grasses and ground cover, flanked by low landscape lighting and river rock. It turns a simple trip across the yard into something that feels intentional and immersive. Even on a rainy Portland day, it is the kind of detail that stops you.
Sustainable Rain Garden and Stormwater Management
Multiple downspouts were rerouted to feed a rain garden on the west side of the property, a common and highly effective solution for Portland's wet winters. Boulder steps and scattered boulders anchor the planting and provide natural stepping stones across the swale.
Custom Trash Enclosure and Boardwalk
A custom-built rubbish pad keeps trash and recycling contained and out of view without interrupting the design.
Plantings Built for Year-Round Interest
The plant palette was chosen to provide structure, texture, and seasonal color across every month of the year. Some plant highlights:
Will Fleming Yaupon Holly
Sweet Box
Native Dull Oregon Grape
Forest Pansy Redbud
Golden Japanese Forest Grass
Purple Coneflower
Black-Eyed Susan
Rheinland Astilbe
Flowering Allium
