Before & After: A Mid-Century Backyard Built for Dogs & Relaxation
Before
Sometimes a backyard looks fine on the surface — grass, a fire pit, some shrubs — but doesn’t actually work for the way you live. That was the case for this city yard.
When our clients moved in two years ago, their backyard had quickly become a muddy mess thanks to poor drainage, dogs, rain, and patchy grass. The fire pit wasn’t well placed, water collected near the foundation, and the space felt more like a hassle than a retreat. Cleaning muddy paws every day was the final straw.
Their vision: a mid-century inspired outdoor living space that’s modern, functional, and dog-friendly — with better drainage, more privacy, and a design that feels intentional and inviting.
Before: Mud, Maintenance & Missed Potential
Grass and exposed dirt turned to mud with dogs and rain.
Fire pit poorly placed and rarely used.
Drainage issues near the house foundation.
Shrubs and bushes didn’t contribute to the design and added upkeep.
No privacy from neighbors, making the space less relaxing.
After: Mid-Century Comfort Meets Dog-Friendly Design
The design blends mid-century modern aesthetics with durable materials that make life easier for two dogs (and their humans):
Horizontal wood fencing for clean lines, security, and privacy.
Concrete raised planters for greenery without the mess of in-ground planting.
Pea gravel and large concrete pavers for a low-maintenance, dog-friendly surface that prevents mud.
River rock mulch for sleek texture and improved drainage.
Repositioned fire pit — modern and perfect for gatherings.
Improved drainage solutions to keep water away from the house and prevent muddy paws.
The result is a private, modern retreat: a yard that looks polished and intentional, with textures of wood, concrete, and gravel working together to create a timeless mid-century vibe. Most importantly, it’s usable year-round — no more mud, no more daily paw-cleaning chores, and a space that’s equally welcoming for dogs and people.
